Help Make Semipublic's First Industry-Wide Survey a Success
We're tracking changes in the public media industry and need your help.
Here at Semipublic, we have long been proponents of open data in public media, especially as stipulated by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. In fact, we pulled together several allies in September to submit an open records request to the corporation asking for station financial and operating data. (We haven’t succeeded in our request - yet.)
Public media has benefited enormously from the response to the end of federal funding, which was driven by publicly-available information and analysis, but a lot of that data is either stale or drying up. So, as we were preparing for the winding-down of CPB, Semipublic began creating a survey of public media’s leaders that would serve to fill information gaps, not just for the industry and its audience, but also for funders who are looking to make an impact.
So, if you’re a public media leader, we need your help: Please fill out this survey about how your station is responding to the end of federal funding by Thanksgiving.
The survey is brief - it should only take you about 5 minutes - and your responses will be anonymized. But more importantly, your responses will be used to help tell the story of where the entire industry is right now and where it’s thinking about going in the next few months.
The end of federal funding doesn’t have to mean the end of information-sharing among public media stations: We are already working together to understand each other and to help the rest of the country understand public media’s current struggles. Our survey is designed to continue that momentum.
